Work Smarter with the New LP360 AI Ground Classification Add-On

Leverage the power of AI and the Cloud to process computer-intensive automatic ground classification.

What is the LP360 Automatic AI Ground Classification Add-On?

The LP360 Automatic AI Ground Classification Add-On is a cloud-based deep learning algorithm that allows users to automatically classify LAS datasets as ground or non-ground—right from within LP360 Desktop. With a simple click, users can submit their point cloud for processing through LP360 Cloud. The result? A cleaned, ground-classified point cloud returned directly to your project as a ready-to-use layer.

LP360’s AI-driven classification model is pre-trained and optimized for terrain analysis from dense point clouds, especially in complex environments or under thick canopy. There’s no need to build or train your own AI models, and no complicated point cloud task setup or configurations. The process is designed to be intuitive, effective, and fast. See for yourself in the demonstration below:

Martin Flood, the VP of Special Projects at GeoCue, led the production and design of the new add-on and commented, “Our extensive beta testing clearly shows that the new Automatic AI Ground Classification Add-On for LP360 significantly enhances ground segmentation accuracy, drastically reducing the manual effort required for post-processing cleanup. While no automated method is perfect, users will see substantially fewer classification errors compared to traditional methods, making their workflows more efficient and effective and getting to a clean ground surface faster.”

Why Choose LP360’s AI Ground Classification?

Traditional ground classification methods, such as the adaptive TIN algorithm, require considerable manual intervention and lengthy editing times, especially in complex terrain. LP360’s AI-powered approach is designed to minimize this effort substantially and offers several distinct advantages over conventional algorithmic classification methods:

Effortless Workflow

Gone are the days of configuring multiple point cloud tasks, macros, and scripts with complicated settings. With LP360’s AI classification, simply select your dataset and submit with a single click. Your classified data returns automatically as a new, accessible layer with a classified ground surface.

Improved Classification Accuracy

Extensive testing has shown LP360’s AI significantly reduces false positives (non-ground points incorrectly labeled as ground) and false negatives (ground points incorrectly unclassified) compared to traditional methods, particularly in challenging environments like complex terrain or under dense vegetation.

No Training Required

LP360 utilizes a pre-trained deep learning model, removing the need for users to provide training data or build their own AI model. The classifier is optimized to handle various environments and datasets out of the box.  No need to become your own AI model guru or spend hours training using your own datasets.

Cloud Efficiency

The cloud-based nature of the classification means that computationally intensive processing tasks are efficiently handled remotely, freeing up local computing resources to continue working and accelerating data delivery times.

Optimizing Your AI Ground Classification Experience

To ensure optimal results with LP360’s AI classification, LP360 embeds several best practices right in the new Ground Classification ribbon:

  • Pre-processing Tools: You can use LP360’s built-in options for outlier detection, smoothing, and noise deletion, recommended for most datasets to further enhance your ground classification results.
  • Tile Size Configuration:   Optimum tile sizing is done automatically by LP360 upon upload to the AI classifier, removing the need to tile your data ahead of classification.
  • Quality Check  Critical Areas: AI classification does not remove the need to check your results for quality, accuracy and completeness.  LP360’s built-in QA/QC review tools help you easily check complex terrains, water bodies, steep slopes, and areas with dense or overhanging vegetation for potential misclassification and quickly correct errors  using  built-in editing tools.  Use the new automated ground cleanup tools to interactively apply corrections over problem areas quickly, review the results and commit the changes (or reject them) to the ground surface as needed.
  • Confirm Your Data’s Spatial Accuracy: After AI classification, LP360’s accuracy analysis tools will help you confirm the spatial accuracy of your ground surface to the latest ASPRS accuracy reporting standards.  Simply load your Ground Checkpoints (GCPs) and run LP360’s Control Points Report to get a full analysis of the accuracy of your AI ground surface,  LP360 will even identify and remove any systematic bias in your point cloud via its Auto-Correct function.
